The Lord give you peace. As we gather to honour the memory of Saint Paschal Baylon, a humble Franciscan friar whose life exemplifies a deep love for the Eucharist, unwavering faith, and joyful service. His life offers us powerful lessons, especially in light of today’s readings, about how to live out our faith with conviction and love.

Born around 1540 in Aragon, Spain, Paschal Baylon entered the Franciscan friars at a young age. His life was marked by simplicity, humility, and a profound love for God. Despite his humble background, Paschal’s spiritual depth and devotion made him a beloved figure among his peers and the community. He was known for his extraordinary love of the Eucharist—spending hours in adoration, often singing and praying before the Blessed Sacrament. His devotion was not merely outward; it was the wellspring of his life, shaping his actions and his entire existence.

Saint Paschal is remembered as a model of humility, prayer, and service. He cared for the sick, supported the poor, and dedicated himself to the praise of God through his love of the Eucharist. His life reminds us that holiness is accessible to all, especially when rooted in love and devotion.

Paschal’s love for the Eucharist was at the center of his spiritual life. He believed that Jesus truly present in the Eucharist was the source of his strength and joy. His hours of adoration reflected a desire to be united with Christ, to be transformed by His presence, and to bring that love into the world. His life teaches us that daily, sincere Eucharistic devotion can deepen our relationship with Jesus and inspire us to live more faithfully.

Today’s first reading from Acts 13 speaks of how the Gospel was preached boldly, even amid opposition, and how the love of God was extended to all nations. The Gospel from John reminds us that to know Jesus is to know the Father, and that through faith, we are called to do His works.

Saint Paschal exemplifies these themes. His love for the Eucharist was a testament to his belief in Christ’s true presence within it. He was able to penetrate beyond the

veil of just bread, and with spiritual eyes discern the presence of the Creator of all things. The humility and generosity he saw in Christ’s presence within the lowly state of a tiny host, impelled him to embrace humility in his own life all the more.

Saint Paschal’s life encourages us to:

  • Cultivate a deep love for the Eucharist, making time for adoration and prayer.
  • Live with humility, recognizing that true greatness comes through service.
  • Be bold in our faith, unafraid to proclaim Christ’s love in our words and actions.
  • Embrace joy in doing the Lord’s work, trusting that He will work through us.

As we celebrate his feast day, let us ask for Saint Paschal’s intercession to strengthen our faith, deepen our love for the Eucharist, and inspire us to live out the Gospel with joy and humility. May his example remind us that holiness is within reach for all who love and serve the Lord. Amen.
