Friday – 5th Week in Ordinary Time – A

As we have been hearing in the readings leading up to the ones that we find today in today's Mass, King Solomon has lost his way because we are told that his wives had enticed him to worship and bow the knee before false and non-existent gods (cf. 1 Kings 11:4–8). And so Solomon, giving in in his old age, began to be fractured and broken, and he lost his ability to remain faithful to the Lord. But his culpability is not absent. In other words, he made his own choices.

Nella prima lettura vediamo come Salomone si sia lasciato trascinare all’idolatria (cf. 1 Re 11:4–8). Il profeta Ahia strappa il mantello e dice a Geroboamo: “Prendine dieci pezzi” (1 Re 11:31). Il Signore annuncia: “Io strapperò il regno dalle mani di Salomone e ti darò dieci tribù” (1 Re 11:31), mentre “una tribù rimarrà a lui per amore di Davide mio servo e di Gerusalemme” (1 Re 11:32). Così “Israele si ribellò alla casa di Davide” (1 Re 12:19). La divisione esteriore manifesta una frattura interiore.
