19th Week of Ordinary Time C – Tuesday – Saint Jane Frances de Chantal

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, whose memory we celebrate today, lived a life marked by deep love, painful loss, and unwavering faith. Born in France in 1572, she was a devoted wife and mother who endured the tragic death of her husband in a hunting accident, leaving her a widow with several young children. Instead of allowing grief to embitter her, Jane turned her sorrow into a deeper surrender to God’s will. She dedicated herself to works of mercy and to her family until, through providential friendship with Saint Francis de Sales, she discerned a religious vocation. Together they founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, a community rooted in humility, gentleness, and interior devotion, especially welcoming to women who were not physically strong enough for more austere orders.

Saint Jane Frances shows us what Proverbs 31 celebrates: the strength and wisdom of a woman who “reaches out her hands to the poor” and who “fears the Lord.” She didn’t become holy by running from suffering, but by letting suffering soften her heart into deeper compassion and trust. Like the Psalmist, she learned to still her soul “like a weaned child on its mother’s lap.” Her sanctity is gentle, hidden, and accessible to us—especially for those who face the daily demands of family, grief, caregiving, or hidden service.

To the parishioners of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church in Toronto, a parish under the care of our Franciscan friars there, this saint offers a very personal model of discipleship. In a city full of busyness and ambition, she reminds us that holiness does not require noise or notoriety. She shows that greatness is found in doing the will of God quietly, persistently, in the ordinary rhythms of life—just as Jesus says in today’s Gospel: “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” The people of this parish bear the name of a woman who lived this Gospel—not by chasing recognition, but by becoming a spiritual mother to countless others through her humility and love.

So let this be your special inspiration: to seek holiness not far away, but in the very place you are planted. Like Saint Jane, may you find peace in God’s will, strength in service, and joy in knowing that, in Christ, you belong to a family that is eternal.
