Wednesday – 24th Week in Ordinary Time – A – Memorial of Saint Cornelius, Pope and Martyr, and Saint Cyprian, Bishop and Martyr

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, peace be with you. Today's readings at Mass on this memorial of two great saints speak powerfully about unity and fidelity under persecution. Saint Paul describes Christians as fragile earthen vessels that can be broken and bruised and struck down without being destroyed because what is contained within them is the life of Christ himself. In other words, Christ who lives within us sustains us through very difficult times. And in the Gospel, Jesus prays that his disciples remain one, protected from evil, and consecrated in truth. How important it is that we remain united, and these themes became flesh in Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, these two third-century bishops who defended the unity of the Church during persecution and controversy, and ultimately gave their lives for Christ.

Le letture di oggi, nella memoria dei Santi Cornelio e Cipriano, ci parlano con forza dell'unità e della fedeltà nella persecuzione. San Paolo descrive i cristiani come fragili vasi di creta che possono essere colpiti e feriti senza essere distrutti, perché portano dentro di sé la vita di Cristo. San Paolo scrive: «Noi abbiamo questo tesoro in vasi di creta, affinché appaia che questa straordinaria potenza appartiene a Dio, e non viene da noi» (2 Corinzi 4,7). Cornelio e Cipriano non erano forti perché non potevano essere spezzati. Erano forti perché, quando venivano colpiti, Cristo rimaneva dentro di loro.
